A LITTLE ABOUT THE AREA... Having lived in Costa Rica full time for about 15 years, I've decided this part of the country is the absolute best. Santa Teresa boasts expansive white sand beaches, and there are private little nooks and crannys everywhere. It's a very special part of the country, popular with tourists from all over the world craving a "bohemian" lifestyle, but while at the same time, catering to famous celebrities, many who have made their homes here, as well as a very private and high end clientele looking to escape the rest of the world. Lonely Planet says, "Get ready for tasty waves, creative kitchens and babes in bikinis..." and that is pretty much right on time. The beaches are beautiful and the main road of Mal Pais, Carmen Beach, Santa Teresa and many others run parallel to the beach, so no matter where you are, you're close to the water and can usually hear waves crashing. There are a ton of great options for dining from the high end to fish tacos and beers... Mal Pais is a few minutes south down the street and is popular with surfers and fishermen. It is also less populated than Santa Teresa and Carmen, so you'll find that it's a nice option for beating the crowds. When you come into town from Cobano, you land at the center of town in the commercial heartbeat of Carmen with lots of shopping and various stores, and then you can turn right and drive up towards Santa Teresa and Hermosa, or turn left to Mal Pais.
